One way to take a problem and turn it into an advantage

WTF?

This was the moment when

one of my clients

won over various team members

who had been resistant to change.

The story below,

excerpted from my book,

will inspire you to take

what appears to be a problem

and turn it into an advantage.

As I say in the book,

“If you can’t fix it, feature it.”

FROM RISK FORWARD®:

Kate Hutchison was Chief Marketing Officer

of a software company when we worked together.

At the request of the CEO,

she rebranded a suite of products,

but the changes she made

upset the vast majority of the

engineers and product team members.

When we met to plan out her keynote

for the company conference,

we brainstormed a variety of options

for how to address the issue.

Kate settled on a bold approach.

As her opening, she stepped onstage,

looked out at the audience of thousands,

and said, “I know what you’re thinking.”

She clicked to her first slide.

There, in huge letters,

was the acronym “WTF?”

The audience burst out laughing.

They knew that she knew they were upset.

In acknowledging what they were feeling,

she began to rebuild trust and rapport.

If you can’t fix it, feature it.
