Are You Throwing Wet Noodles, Hoping to Get the Gig?

Victoria Labalme - noodles on a wall.jpeg

Last Thursday, we posted a notice for a new position at my company.

Of the 60+ resumes and cover letters we received in the last few days alone, only 5 people had actually taken a few seconds to look up what my company is all about. All the other cover letters were formal, impersonal, antiseptic...and standard.

"Dear Hiring Manager"..."To Whom It May Concern." What followed was a form letter.

Too often in business, people opt for "formality" (form ality) under the guise of "professionalism".  And what a loss.

In this particular case, being "professional" is really a mask for one of two things:  1) being lazy  2) being fearful of saying the wrong thing.

Sales managers, grad schools, and training programs would be wise to teach those hoping to get a position or win a meeting with a prospect that they MUST be creative and proactive.

"Professional" shouldn't mean bland, boring, stock, standard, void of research or creativity.

When it comes to applying for a job or trying to win a sale, throwing wet noodles up against a wall to see which stick won't work, especially in today's competitive market.

What to do: As a start, look at the website and find even just one small element to comment on -- something unique about the company logo, a quote posted on the site, a video, a particular line in the organization's value/mission statement, something you noticed in the CEO's bio (her alma mater, area of interest) etc. and include a comment about any of these in your cover letter.

Be sincere. Be creative. And if you do this, you will be leaps and bounds ahead of the rest.

Victoria Labalme - bow & arrow.jpgIt shows you did you homework, it shows you care, it shows your interest and your attention to detail. And today, those qualities will stand you in very good stead. No need to be flinging noodles.  These other techniques will serve you like a bow and arrow.

How Boring is Your Office? Not as Cool as it Could be...

How boring is your office?

Office.jpeg
Are you "running with the pack", doing everything you can to fit in?

OR
Are you asking yourself,
"How can I create a unique environment?"

one that makes YOU smile and that makes your
CLIENTS, CUSTOMERS, and PROSPECTS smile?

Wouldn't it be cool if people walked into your lobby, went to your front desk or entered your office and said

"Wow, cool.
THIS...is different.
THIS...is inspiring.
THIS...is memorable."
?
Financial planners, insurance advisors, listen up!

Enough with the buffed nails, the spray in your hair, the phony, "Well Mr. Jones, that is an excellent question."

Stop pandering.

Enough with the boring office that has manila folders stacked on your desk, brochures, fancy financial pie charts and a photo of your family, you on a yacht, shaking hands with someone famous, catching a giant fish, or playing golf.

Trust me, we've seen it. Your clients have seen it. And it's not very original.

Where is your personality?
Your Through Line?
Your inner genius?

BE YOURSELF. BE CREATIVE. AND HAVE SOME FUN.

Tap into the power of THE PRISM EFFECT

Victoria Labalme The Prism Effect.png
Use the Full Spectrum Communication to make your ideas come to life. Reconnect with your Through Line (the white light that beams into the prism), your true purpose....and then find ways to delver that message in unique, creative outlets (full spectrum of colors).

So...if you are in financial services, why not make your door handle something to do with a dollar bill or use coins in a unique way?
Coins for Creativity.jpg

Here's a company that'll create a door handle with your logo or a replica of an every day item.

Click on this link:

Pretty cool.

Try something other than the norm. Put a fascinating object on your desk...A toy. A game. Something related to the concept of your business: insurance, $, peace of mind, dreams.

Technical professionals, IT specialists, programmers...

Computer chip - Art.jpeg
Put up a totally cool
computer motherboard on your wall.
Show us the inside of a chip
(take a photo and blow that up
as a piece of art).
Use a unique piece of hardware
as a doorknob or for a business card holder
vs. some boring plastic U-tray
that you got at your local office supply store.

Sales studs...

Stop wearing khaki colored chinos with a blackberry strapped to your belt!

(And if you're between the ages of 22-45, enough with the spikey criss-cross hair or little tuft that looks like a golf tee. Makes those without hair just wanna nestle a golf ball on there and whack it...)

For EVERYONE who feels
uninspired by their office, cubicle, lobby or work environment....this is for YOU
(and your boss)
Be creative.
Get out of the rut.
Have some fun.

ENGAGE the power of THE PRISM EFFECT

HOW
?
Take the Through Line of your business
and create unique design elements
that engage your brilliance, gifts, talents, ideas
and incorporate the theme of your business.

(For more on this concept of the THEME of a business, check out the oh-so-brilliant book The Experience Economy by Pine & Gilmore.)

Educators, healthcare specialists, physical fitness outlets & stores, real estate brokers, food service companies...whatever your industry, be creative.

Here's an example of
Full Spectrum Communication in action.

At the Hotel Vintage Plaza in Portland, Oregon, you will find unique touches of creativity, all in line with the theme of wine or the V of "Vintage":

THE HOTEL ENTRANCE
(what is the door handle to your office?)

Victoria Labalme - Creative Communication - Wall of Wine.jpg

A WALL OF WINE separating the lobby from another room.
What's the wall like at your office? Grey, white, boring?

The  RECEPTION AREA otherwise known as the concierge desk.
(Wine bottles are illuminated by a white translucent wall.) What does your reception area look like? What could it look like?

Thumbnail image for Victoria Labalme - Creative Communication - Recycling using Brand.jpg

In the lobby, a RECYCLING BARREL
is filled with corks and a sign encouraging guests to recycle the corks from their wine bottles.
What are you recycling? Could it be something related specifically to your industry?

Rather than jump on the "green" bandwagon like every other business with emails that have this phrase:

"Please consider the environment before printing this email...."
(oh, like that's original...)

or hotels that ask you to spare them from washing towels & sheets, The Hotel Vintage Plaza has found a way to do this AND also

encourage recycling of a specific item
related to the Through Line
of their brand

They have done something unique, something creative,
something related to wine and something to make
YOU
 the client, customer, or guest
feel
special.

In the process, too, they are also educating
people about the rainforest, the Amazon, the extinction of cork.

AND HOW COOL IS THAT?

So...

1) Think of just one way to make your office more unique, keeping your Through Line and business brand in mind.
2) Implement your idea(s).
3) Write to Studio@VictoriaLabalme.com, tell us (me) what you did and include some "before & after" photos so we can all oooh & ahhh.

I will send a FREE Mini Book of THE PRISM EFFECT
Victoria Labalme The Prism Effect Mini Book.jpg
to the first 5 people who follow steps 1, 2, 3.

CHECK IT OUT  -->
HANDY, EH?
IT'S FILLED WITH IDEAS TO HELP YOUR BUSINESS.

And if what you did is totally great, I might just feature you on a future blog.

Wouldn't that be fun?

Now you're smiling...and your creative wheels are turning.

(And isn't that better than fitting in?)

The Creative Approach: Success without a Business Plan

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
I was in the San Francisco Bay Area last week and had the great fortune to be -- in a 24 hour window -- with people from Star Wars/Lucas Ranch, Pixar and The Muppets. It was an extraordinary set of hours.

One creative theme that emerged again and again was that some of the best successes came from these creative people working from the inside out...not from trying to make a landmark success or huge profit or from putting together an extensive business plan but rather from trusting creative instincts and ideas -- developing these and moving forward.

This approach is not just for artists. Curiously enough, it holds merit in the business realm as well. In his superb book, "Pour Your Heart Into It" Howard Schulz (Chairman & CEO of Starbucks) talked about the fact that Starbucks never set out to create a brand. They set out to create an experience, serving people one cup of coffee at a time.

One of the most respected and financially successful business owners I know recently told me that whenever he made a move in his business (putting on new seminars, creating new DVDs, setting up an online learning center) it was never because he thought it would be a good move strategically but because he felt it would be fun, it would serve his community, and it was the next right thing to do.

So for those of you who (like me) feel like a deer in the headlights when someone says, "What's your business plan? Where do you want to be in 10 years?" take comfort in the fact that if you focus on trusting your own creative vision and on doing excellent work, you will end up where you need to be and more likely, farther than you ever thought possible.
